Emily spends the religious holidays with her father, since Dawn I and are not religious--or are, at best, dirty immoral pagans--and he's a good christian man (ie, fundie whack-a-doodle). Last year, we picked her up right after church, and during the car ride home, she was ruminating on what she had learned that day.
"You know, Jesus died for our sins. And Easter is the day that he rose from the dead." Dawn and I didn't say anything, just looked at each other. We are big on providing facts, exposing our kids to a variety of beliefs. and letting them figure it out for themselves. If she becomes a christian, that will be her choice, not because we forced anything on her. Suddenly, her innocent little face scrunched up with the effort of reconciling this obviously bizarre new information with her previous worldview. "So...Jesus was dead...and he rose from the dead..that means Jesus is a ZOMBIE! And he wants to EAT our BRAINS!! RAARR!! We have to eat his brains before he eats ours!!" We burst out laughing. We've never been so proud. And ever since, Easter has been Zombe Jesus Day in our house. |
